African-American women who choose to have a relaxer/perm may come to the time in their life when they want to go all natural. This is a process however because the only way to get rid of a perm is the same way to get rid of dreadlocks...by cutting it all off!

So most women choose to do this all at one time and start all over- bald shaved, tennie afro, twists, etc. and then the whole entire hair is natural- or if you are like me, a person will very long hair- you may want to start cutting off the relaxer/perm in steps. I had my first perm when I was in my early twenties, now that I am 28 yrs old and that relaxer was put in my hair about 8 years ago, it is JUST NOW completely out of my hair! And I had been cutting it off a few time since then. Isn't that crazy.

So now that I am completely free, my hair is curled back up and ready to bounce and move. I am bi-racial and have mixed hair. When growing up it was wavy and long and got curlier year after year. Then in high school, everyone had straight hair. So I wanted straight hair. When you straighten curly hair, it is longer and pretty. But now at what cost? So I purchased a flat iron and then realized that my hair was so curly that to get it straight, I had to flatter the heck out of it- leading to damaged ends. On top of this, whenever it rained or I worked out, my curls would come back, which was the main reason I got a perm. A big no no. The perm really didn't keep my hair that straight anyway but I lived with it.

Years of coloring after that perm made my hair unhealthy and I just really wanted healthy hair. I once cut about 5 inches off, which gave me my shortest hair cut ever and the perm was still there! When wet, my hair curled up to my ears. Then I would trim my hair ever so often going from long hair to a long bob style.

Now in 2010, I was thinking to heck with it, I need the last few inches of this 8 year perm out of my hair and out of my life! There is true freedom in a hair cut. I feel free and liberated. I can feel the wind on my neck when its curled up and natural and the nest part is my mentality. I was thinking, "I'll cut it and have healthy hair so I can flat iron it whenever I wanted to and it would have bounce and body." Needless to say, I have only straightened it for a day and a half and then wanted my curls back, so I washed it. I probably will wear my hair as is for a while. Florida is just too hot for straight hair right now anyway.

I did feel like I couldn't wear my hair out and it was not until I went to a professional to style my hair in layers that I was finally able to. At first, all of my hair was one length and so even when curly, it would weigh down at the top and raise at the bottom....not cute. So I wore it in a ponytail ALL of the time. Never again no more!!!!

I am free and it feels good. I even was able to put my hair in two strand twists without the ends unraveling because my curls are there at the end. Before, the permed hair would cause the twists to come apart. I am so happy. I got my curly fro, big hair and I can wear it as I please or wrap it up in my headwraps as I please. A perfect end to a terrible hair mess. Ladies, don't get a perm/relaxer. IF you want hair that is not like yours, get a wig or extensions and leave your hair alone!!!!!!!!!!!
